A Neutral Density (ND) filter reduces the level of light that reaches the sensor in your camera. This allows you to set your camera to an extremely slow shutter speed, without the image becoming overexposed.

Try your hand at long exposure photography

You can create artistic long-exposure images. For example, light photography often requires the use of an nd filter to increase the exposure time without any loss of image quality. For more information regarding long exposure photography, we have created a handy guide to long exposure photography on our blog for you to read.

What does ND mean?

ND filters or Neutral Density filters are often measured in F-stop reduction this is a representation of how much light reaching the sensor is reduced, or how many stops of light is reduced. Often this is depicted as ND1, ND2, ND20 etc.

How does the neutral density affect the light sensor?

An ND1 filter has a filter factor of 2, which means the amount of light that is transmitted to the sensor is 50%. As the ND filter increase in density, the amount of light passing through the filter is reduced. For example, an ND16 will only allow 0.001525878906% of the light to pass through to the sensor.

Lets you get creative with bulb mode

The high amount of light reduction can be perfect for when you want to use the Bulb mode on your camera. Click here if you would like tips on how to use the Bulb mode on your DSLR cameras>

Graduated filters

The environment you are shooting in and the lighting conditions will determine what ND filter you will need. For example, a graduated nd filter such as the LEE Filters 100x150mm 0.3 Neutral Density Filter - Soft Grad can be used to have a long exposure landscape photograph without the sky becoming overexposed or the ground being too dark. This is exceedingly helpful when shooting long-exposure photographs in daylight. You can read more about shooting long-exposure photographs in daylight here>

Experiment with motion blur

The longer exposure times allow you to create images with a large amount of motion blur. This can be effective in some forms of street photography, in which you want to create a sense of movement with people moving through your image. Alternatively having a long enough exposure can allow you to eliminate the people from your architecture photographs.
