Why buy the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III?
Introducing the latest flagship camera from Canon, the EOS 1DX Mark III. With its dramatically improved battery life and 4K video at 60p, Canon’s new pro-level camera is the ultimate creation tool.
Why should we be excited about the 1DX III?
In an ever-changing market, Canon’s DSLR cameras are still an extremely popular choice for professional photographers. Whether that be sports or wildlife, they’re right up there producing innovative DSLR camera technology.
The announcement of the EOS-1D X Mark III promises a huge leap from its predecessor - the 1DX Mark II. The folks at Canon have guaranteed leaps and bounds in AF performance, image quality, video production, and connectivity. Giving the pros and passionate enthusiasts alike, the edge they desire.
Breakneck Autofocus
In their own words, the Canon 1DX III will have ‘blisteringly fast’ autofocus. Canon has spent time developing and overhauling the systems to offer superb tracking from highly accurate and quick AF.
They have worked on this by developing a new autofocus algorithm. This advancement has been designed with a focus on tracking and stability. This has been paired with an optical viewfinder and live-view shooting. Met with deep learning technology - it’s set to give you a huge advantage when tracking your shot.
The optical viewfinder will utilize a new AF sensor. Canon has said it will offer 28x the resolution in the centre of your sensor than that of the popular Mark 2 edition. A broadened autofocus brightness range makes the AF more reliable and precise than ever before.
The new camera will offer photographers a wide range of autofocus functions with the aim to give the perfect shot. When shooting with Live View, users will make use of an impressive 525 AF area.
This is made possible using a Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. This covers approx. 90x100% of the sensor.
Giving flexibility when framing your subject, the camera will use the same algorithms whether in Live View or Optical VF. This will make framing fast subjects in motorsport or wildlife exceptionally easy.
Full AF and AE are far better at higher frame rates than before. This is possible whether you’re using the Optical Viewfinder or Live View.
Optical up to approx 16fps on the mechanical shutter.
Live View up to approx. 20fps on electronic/mechanical shutter.
The use of CFexpress card slots enables 5x the RAW burst depth of the MK II.
Stay Sharp and Focused
Whether you shoot with the Canon EOS 1D X Mark III sensational optical viewfinder or using its 3.1-inch touchscreen, you can't help but notice the speed and accuracy of its AF system. New technology advancements have created a new Face and Eye detection feature that even tracks subjects that are wearing goggles for helmets.
This is achievable thanks to Deep-Learning algorithms that have been programmed to identify different sporting scenarios. No matter how fast the action moves, the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III moves faster adjusting focus to give you critical focus when you need it.
Dedicated Imaging Sensor and Processor for Focusing
When we introduced the EOS 650 back in 1987, we revolutionised the SLR market with line-type CMOS autofocus sensors. These are so capable that they’re still used in EOS DSLRs today – but the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III takes the next step, with new technology.
191 AF Points
The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III boasts 191 AF points, of which 155 are cross-type for extra sensitivity – perfect for nailing critical focus on fast-moving athletes and animals when light levels get low. These AF points can be used on their own for highly selective focusing, in small groups and zones that can be moved around the frame, or all together with the camera selecting the best points to use automatically.
Redesigned Reflex Mirror System
To help the Canon 1DX Mark III focus accurately at high continuous shooting speeds, Canon worked on redesigning the reflex mirror system. That aim was to produce a Mirror system that returns quickly as possible to its resting position between each shot, without ‘mirror bounce’ to provide the AF sensor with continuous direct light. This is what has been achieved in the new Canon EOS 1DX III and is able to function at 16 times a second, with is fair to say, an extraordinary piece of mechanical engineering.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
When using the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III like a mirrorless camera, in Live View mode, autofocusing is performed by our renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF system. This turns virtually every pixel on the camera’s sensor into an imaging pixel and a phase-detection AF pixel. Dual Pixel CMOS AF can operate quickly when shooting stills, tracking moving objects around the frame, and more smoothly when capturing video, allowing professional pull-focus effects from one object to another.
The implementation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology in the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III sees focus-capable pixels over the whole height of the frame and over 90 per cent of its width. Performance has increased to a level where it’s possible to shoot at 20fps with fast, accurate, continuous focusing. The same deep-learning AF algorithm that’s available when using the camera in viewfinder mode is available to Dual Pixel CMOS AF, so you can be confident that critical sharpness is being maintained on the object, animal or person being tracked.
Continuous shooting at up to 20fps
The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can capture up to 20 full-frame 20.1-megapixel images every second when shooting in live view mode, using either its mechanical shutter to capture motion faithfully or an electronic shutter for completely silent shooting.
When using the camera’s optical viewfinder the continuous shooting rate is 16fps – an extraordinary achievement for a DSLR camera, and one made possible by Canon’s expertise in mechanical engineering.
Direct drive motors are used to drive the reflex mirror up and down, returning it to its resting position swiftly, accurately and the minimal ‘mirror bounce’.
The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III’s shutter is rated for 500,000 shots, offering new levels of speed and reliability that give you confidence when the pressure is on.
4K60p recording, 5.5K RAW, Cinematic Video
Whatever your editing workflow, the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can capture footage that will fit right in and allow new levels of image quality and creativity.
Capture oversampled DCI 4K/60p video internally using the full width of the sensor, so your lenses see the same as when you’re shooting stills. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark III can shoot in 17:9 DCI or 16:9 UHD aspect ratios and record the results using either the H.264 codec or as 10-bit H.265 codec when using Canon Log. Footage captured in this way is intentionally low in contrast, so it’s easier to colour grade in post-production.
A smoother workflow
Any pro will know that when a client is involved, delivery is as important as offering talent behind the lens. The EOS-1D X Mark III offers plenty of tools to improve your workflow and make life easy in the field. Wi-Fi, Low Energy Bluetooth, and GPS have been optimized. This will speed up your work and connect you to the outside world.
Practical, comfortable, rugged and weather-sealed
Canon has developed the 1DX III to give a pleasurable, relaxed experience to the hard-working professional. From flawless ergonomic design to a durable magnesium body and everything in between.
Excellent standards in weather sealing will allow you to shoot for hours in poor conditions. Whether that’s a gale, a humid greenhouse or a downpour on a football pitch. The 1DX III will allow you to relax and focus on your task with peace of mind.
Allowing fumble-free operation, a nice touch is the illuminated buttons. These will pair nicely with the low light shooting capability to give you easy control in dark/dim settings.
AF point selection allows full control. Smoothly change your AF points on the fly using the AF-ON button; allowing more focus on your overall composition.
Canon has also worked to develop the battery life. It will carry the same LP-E19 battery as its predecessor, but the consumption has been dramatically optimized - again another reason to relax on-site.
