  • What lenses can be used with the EOS R?

    The New RF Lens Range

A significantly wider lens mount will introduce Canon users to a brand new line of high-end RF Lenses with considerable light gathering capability.

This mount is 54mm in diameter with a short 20mm flange distance meaning Canon have now developed lenses that are not only faster but also smaller than their DSLR equivalents.

  • Canon EOS RF Lens Range

EF and EF-S Lenses

The EOS R takes three new mount adapters that allow the camera to work with more than 70 EF and EF-S lenses. For those of you upgrading from other EOS cameras, this means you retain old kit whilst making the move to mirrorless.

Impressive NEW Dual Pixel CMOS AF on the Canon EOS R Mirrorless Camera

A new advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system features an astounding 5655 selectable points for incredibly rapid and precise focus. This system is effective all the way down to a negative six stop exposure value (-6EV). Giving you unprecedented AF performance in dark conditions.

Multimedia creators will be relieved to know that the AF system is tuned to work with the UHD 4K recording PLUS the addition of Mover Digital IS to provide additional stabilisation.

What is Dual Pixel RAW?

We first encountered Dual Pixel RAW on the ESO 5D Mark IV. Here's what it does... similar to RAW it gathers a large amount of information so that adjustments to the image can be made post-capture. What makes it unique is that you can fine-tune focus! This is a huge bonus is you missed focus slightly or would like to alter the image to enhance your composition. In order to take advantage of this feature, users must use Canon's own professional software.

How fast is the EOS R?

Offering 8fps continuous shooting, The Canon EOS R combines Canons reputation for high-speed readout technologies with the camera’s DIGIC 8 processor. This gives the EOS R a strong balance of high pixel count and shooting speed. With a large buffer and fast writing speed, the EOS R takes a USH-II SD card, ensuring there is no lag against its impressive performance.

Canon also claims that this camera features the fastest autofocus in the world (at the time of release)!

Would this EOS R be good for Weddings and Events?

The Canon EOS R has an impressive silent shooting mode, which will enable photographers to capture the moment without causing a disturbance.

What control features does the Canon EOS R Have?

The Canon EOS R has some impressive new control features including a new Touch Bar and Control Ring.

  • EOS RF Control Ring

The new control ring, which is featured on the new Canon RF Lenses, will allow photographers to have full power over a range of customizable functions without having to take their eye away from the viewfinder. This cool feature will let you switch up the Aperture, with a depth of field preview - reminiscing back to more traditional cameras.
  • Canon EOS R RF Control Ring
  • EOS R Touch Bar

The Canon EOS R's multi-functional touch-sensitive bar is another clever way to control the functionality of the camera. Customisable to match any type of shoot, whatever your priority - you can change settings such as autofocus and ISO; while browsing, framing and shooting through the viewfinder.
  • Canon EOS R Touch Bar

Articulated Touch Screen

The 3.15" 2.1m-dot Fully Articulated Touchscreen LCD can be adjusted to a broad range of angles, proving very useful in the field. The screen and processing speeds of the camera allow for easy control and navigation.

Can the EOS R shoot video?

Created to meet the demands of multimedia creators the EOS R delivers UHD 4K footage at up to 30fps and 480mb/s. It also features FHD recording at 60 fps and HD at 120fps for slow-motion playback. Recording in the camera will deliver 4:2:2 sampling an 8bit colour detail. Recording to an external device will make it possible to record 4:2:2 1-bit footage in ITU-R and CT.2020.

Included Canon Log allows users to capture footage with an outstanding 800% improvement in Dynamic Range (12 stops). Videographers will be satisfied with the potential for colour grading.

The new View Assist function emulates graded footage for true to footage monitoring on the cameras LCD.

Audio may be recorded using the integrated stereo mic or via an external mic connected through the 3.5mm mic jack.

Clifton Cameras' Review of the Canon EOS-R

The feature that stood out for me the most was the excellent autofocus, it felt fast, responsive and easy to control. I particularly liked the tracking which was quick and simple to engage. The new EOS R touch bar and the control ring on the lens are superbly useful features - combined with the electronic viewfinder, the camera was very easy to use and I could see this being a real asset for any events or wedding photographers who need to think on their feet. Only had the camera for two weeks but the good points are;
1. Ergonomics - fits my hand like a glove
2. Focus Guide feature when using manual focus.
3. EVF display. Especially like it rotates whichever position you have the camera in.
4. Tilt/Swivel touch screen.
5. Battery life and can use my old batteries.
6. Can use all my EF lenses with the adapter.
Cannot see the point of the slider/touch bar.

fast focus easy access to the menu etc.
Unable to open raw files on my editing software. Had to purchase Lightroom cc which is very good but has made my other software more or less redundant.

The viewfinder and LCD screen are excellent, good colour and brightness. The camera is comfortable to hold with a good grip on the right hand side. Battery life is good and the adaptor works perfectly with all my EF and EF-s lens, w/angle to telephoto. Can use the viewfinder even without glasses. Layout like a Canon DSLR.
Autofocus very quick with all lens.
Lots of information on LCD or viewfinder, can change settings very easily with touch screen.
Controls a bit smaller than a 5DSr but ok. A bit unbalanced with 100-400 lens.
Cannot get used to sliding MF bar, have disabled it.

Viewfinder is fantastic, the exposure changes as you change shutter speed or aperture, so no more mistakes!!
You can scroll through all your images and zoom in using the viewfinder!!
Viewfinder is like night vision in low light.
This camera will autofocus with extenders beyond f9!!!
Autofocus covers the whole screen.
The included Adapter works perfectly with all my EF and EF S lenses..
Raw images are amazing.
Low light capability is excellent.
FPS is a bit slow, hopefully this can be improved with firmware updates?
