Built to give professional results on a budget, the Fujifilm X-T30 - is an exciting addition to the X Range. Taking the sensor from the Fujifilm X-T3 and moving on from the X-T20, this compact, lightweight camera produces stunning image quality. Featuring the latest image sensor and image processor engines this is a compact unit built with a near weightless body. Excellent autofocus speeds and accuracy, plus silent autofocus working up to 30fps make this camera extremely user-friendly in challenging situations. Smooth 4K video with high res audio from the built-in microphone makes this a superb contender for any content creator.
Weighing in at only 383 grams, the Fuji XT30 houses some excellent imaging technology. An X Trans CMOS 4 sensor is combined with a Processor 4 imaging engine. This gives superb noise reduction and excellent performance from a 26.1MP resolution digital camera with an APS-C-size sensor.
ISO160 Sensitivity comes as standard on this model, giving the user more flexibility. It makes the camera perfect for dazzling daylight situations. You can also capture beautiful bokeh when shooting on fast and large aperture lenses.
Film Simulation gives adaptable expression of colour when used with the cameras new ETERNA mode. This also gives the option of monochrome adjustments, ARCOS and Monochrome modes can give you warm and cool tones of blacks.
Colour Chrome Effects will give deep colour and gradation and greater variation in photographic expression.
When it comes to burst shooting, the Fujifilm XT30 will achieve 30fps (effectively video frame rate) on its electronic shutter. This produces images with a 1.25x crop producing 16MP images. The camera will also shoot at 20fps and 10fps on the electronic shutter. It also offers up 8fps with the mechanical shutter.
The X-T30 will give you superb AF accuracy across the full frame. It also boasts rapid, silent continuous shooting. This will work up to 30fps allowing you to work seamlessly in challenging situations.
With 2.16m phase detection pixels, The X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor has approximately 4x the number of previous X series cameras. This is very noticeable when it comes to the accuracy of the X-T30 autofocus phase detection area. Activate the electronic shutter, and you can achieve silent shooting up to 30fps on a 1.25x cropped frame equivalent to 16.6MP. With this, you can capture a range of challenging subjects. This includes any off centre and fast moving objects which can be focused on with ease.
The camera combines its high-speed processor with the capabilities from improved autofocus algorithms. This will give highly accurate detection of eyes and faces. A Face Selection mode will prioritise your selection when using autofocus. This will allow you to select specific human subjects in a busy frame.
The X-T30 has an impressively -3EV low light limit for phase detection autofocus. This makes on-screen phase detection AF possible, even in poorly lit scenes.
Fujifilm has further developed the function of the Advanced SR Auto Mode. This can be immediately activated when using the “Auto Mode Selector lever”, which is positioned on the top panel. The XT30 will automatically select the best settings for your scene, with 58 preset scenes installed.
The X-T30 has six options for autofocus, making the camera adaptable and easy to use.
The XT30 features an advanced 4K/30P video setup, plus high-res audio is delivered by the built-in microphone. Film simulation functions will work with not just stills but now when shooting video, this includes ETERNA motion picture emulator.
You can shoot 4K/30P at 4:2:0 8bit to an SD card. F-log recording and 4:2:2 10bit via the HDMI port capabilities will work well for the serious videographer.

As the counterpart to the X-T3, the X-T30 has inherited many of its most important features while offering better value.
So how do they deliver the same great results for £500 less? You’ll notice build quality isn’t quite as robust on the X-T30 as it is on the X-T3. For example, the screen on the X-T30 is simple in its construction and only tilts in two directions as opposed to three on the X-T3. There’s also a reduction in the resolution of the EVF and you cannot record 10-bit 4K video internally.
Removing these nonessential functions allows Fujifilm to create a pared-down offering while keeping the most important functions like autofocus and processing power intact.
If any of those features are important to you then obviously you should be looking at the X-T3 instead of the X-T30.
If they aren’t then the X-T30, built around the same internals and sensor as the X-T3 creates equally beautiful images. Fujifilm cameras seem to produce some of the best images without post-processing and the X-T30 is no exception. For an APS-C sensor, you get great dynamic range and respectable low light performance. Even when bumping up the ISO the resulting noise takes on a refined quality that looks more like artistic grain than digital interference.
I enjoy using the film-simulation modes available on the X-T30. They don’t feel gimmicky like filters on other cameras. This is due to Fujifilm’s heritage as a maker of film for analogue cameras. Film-simulations on the X-T3 feel like a well-refined feature as opposed to a fun add-on.
I especially like to use Eterna while shooting video. This film-simulation delivers vivid colour and cinema like footage straight out of the camera, ideal for content creators that are looking for the impact of colour-graded footage without the time spent on post-processing. This film-simulation is based on the negative film of the same name designed for motion picture capture with analogue cameras.
It goes without saying that the physicality of the Fujifilm camera is always a plus in my book. I like having tactile control over key camera functions in a day and age where touchscreens and quick menus are becoming more prevalent.
I do appreciate a larger body and this camera is quite small. I have large hands and I am at a loss as to what to do with my ring and small finger while holding the camera. However, the ergonomics will likely suit most people and are desirable for street and travel photography.
I would be happy to own, create content and travel with an X-T30 and count it and the X-T3 as two of my favourite releases of the previous year. I believe value and utility are represented in these two cameras in equal measure.
