Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 G2 VC USD Lens
Tamron has brought back the popular 15-30mm lens with updated performance. This lens is part of the G2 series of lenses with an eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical lens, multiple Low Dispersion elements and a newly developed Anti-reflection eXpand coating along with Vibration Compensation and USD focus system.
What photography is this lens designed for?
Having a 15-30mm focal length, this lens is perfect for landscapes, cityscapes, street, and travel photography.
Is this lens protected from the elements?
Tamron has applied their Fluorine coating to better protected the lens from dirt, dust, and moisture. The body of the lens is also protected with Tamron's Moisture Resistant Construction making it perfect for working outdoors in any conditions.
What is eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical, Low Dispersion and Anti-reflection eXpand?
eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical (XGM) and Low Dispersion (LD) work together to greatly minimise distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations, which is something common in wide-angle lenses. An Anti-reflection eXpand (AX) coating has been applied to reduce ghosting and flare more thoroughly than ever before.
Is Vibration Compensation needed in a wide-angle lens?
VC, or Vibration Compensation, is something that started out with longer telephoto lenses, like 70-200mm or 200-500mm focal lengths, but now it is seen as a great addition to any focal length of the lens. The VC system can help improve the sharpness of an image and allow the user to shoot slow shutter speeds when a monopod, tripod, or any other stabilisation isn't suitable.
The VC system in this lens scored an impressive 4.5 stops* according to CIPA standards.
* CIPA Standard Compliant. For Canon: EOS-5D MKIII is used. For Nikon: D810 is used.
What do Clifton Cameras think of the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8 G2 VC USD Lens?
15-30mm is certainly an odd focal length, as we are used to 12-24mm, 10-20mm, or 16-35mm from other brands, but it works really well across both full frame and APS-C D-SLRs (equiv 24-48mm on APS-C with 1.6x crop). Now they have released this new G2 (generation 2) version it has really improved this quite unknown lens. We know how good the Tamron SP 70-200mm f2.8 Di VC USD G2 and Tamron SP 24-70mm f2.8 G2 VC USD lenses are so the 15-30mm is going to be a great performance, good value for money, wide-angle lens.
