Tokina has announced their second lens in the new atx-i series, the 100mm f/2.8 FF Macro lens. A compact medium tele photo lens that offers the photographer the opportunity to capture landscapes, portraits and macro photography to the highest of standards.
With the strong competition of the Nikon and Canon lenses at the same focal length, the Tokina atx-i 100mm f2.8 FF macro lens had to be something different with significant upgrades from the original atx model. The introudction of the "i" on this series stands for "interactive", implying that the photographer is more involved with the lens and the greater creative process.
Thanks to the design and build of this lens, the Tokina 100mm boasts edge to edge sharpness created through the use of two aspherical glass elements and super-low dispersion glass elements.
The front of the lens has a 55mm filter thread which doesn’t rotate when focusing, it only extends. This allows the photographer to utilise different filters including polarizers to help capture landscapes. The lens body has a focus range limiter situated on the side of the lens. This locks the focus into or out of the macros focusing range to avoid excessive AF hunting.
The lens is capable of creating soft bokeh in both the foreground and background thanks to the classical extending barrel focusing system. With a 9 bladed diaphragm that creates superb and almost circular shaped background highlights up to f/5.6, this lens is the perfect partner for portrait photographers. The 100mm focal length is short enough to allow easy communication with the model whilst the fast f/2.8 aperture allows effective use both indoor and outdoor.
Not just for macro photography, the 100mm focal length can be used to capture distant landscapes with brilliant compression.
For dedicated macro shooters the Tokina atx-i 100mm f2.8 FF Macro lens is capable of life sized reproduction at 30cm, allowing photographers to have a small working distance from their subject and yet still obtain impressive magnification. Designed for full-frame sensors, the focal length equivalent on a DSLR with an APS-C sensor provides a 1.5x-1.6x larger magnification on both Canon and Nikon.
