Versatile, professional, super-telephoto lens
The Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S offers an incredibly versatile zoom length that lends itself to a multitude of photography styles including wildlife, sports, events, aircraft and portraits. Advanced optics and weather sealing further extends its versatility, allowing you to use it in adverse conditions while getting outstanding results.
Fast, accurate and quiet auto-focus
The AF performance is fast, accurate and exceptionally quiet. You can track birds to planes with ease when used with a Nikon Z mirrorless camera, such as the newly released Nikon Z9, that incorporates Animal or Vehicle AF modes.
Sharp and always focussed
The lens has been constructed from 25 elements in 20 groups. This consists of 6 ED elements, 2 super-ED elements as well as elements with Nano Crystal and ARNEO coats, and a fluorine-coated front lens element. This ensures that sharpness is consistent throughout the whole of the frame and controls chromatic aberrations from the centre to the edge of the image, even when having the aperture wide open and close up.
5.5 stops of vibration reduction
You can still capture sharp images at slower shutter speeds thanks to the lens’ 5.5 stops of vibration reduction. The lens also boasts a minimum focusing distance of just 0.75m at the wide-angle end and 0.98m when fully extended.
Weather sealed and lightweight construction
The Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 weighs in at only 1.35kg* and measures just 222mm** making it easy to incorporate into your kit bag. It has also been full weather sealed to keep out dust and moisture while the front element has been coated with Nikon’s non-stick fluorine to repel dust and moisture and is easy to wipe clean.

Perfect for video
The lens is perfect for video as well as photography thanks to its super-smooth aperture control that delivers natural exposure changes. It is well balanced so that it maintains its centre of gravity when you zoom, which is perfect when using with a gimbal. The lens’ silent focusing also means that it can be used in environments where discretion is paramount.
Other features
Other features of the lens include two Fn buttons so that you can assign your preferred functions easily. The lens has a small zoom-ring rotation of just 80° that allows you to fully zoom in without adjusting your grip. The zoom and focus ring respond to just the right amount of torque while the control ring can be used for aperture control, exposure compensation or ISO and the lens will not retract or creep after you zoom in without you having to lock it in place.
