Birdwatching, nature watching Birdwatching, nature watching
Wide field of view and 7x to 10x magnification models are suited for general nature viewing. Observing whales or birds at longer distances is more comfortable at 8x to 12x magnification. Fieldscopes and Spotting Scopes are recommended for even closer views.
  Marine sports, fishing
Waterproofing and durability are critical for these activities. High brightness and a wide field of view are also desirable. Models featuring vibration reduction are convenient for onboard use.
  Spectator sports

First porro prism I’ve used for 40 years- what a great surprise. No wonder so many people rate these bins.
Slightly bulky, that’s all.

These are very impressive binoculars, and I don't think you will find any better at this (or even a considerably higher) price. The image is crisp and sharp, with a wide field of view and good depth of focus. They compare very well with my elderly Zeiss 7x42 binoculars in all situations except viewing at dawn and dusk, when the larger exit pupils of the Zeiss have the advantage. They seem solidly built, and if you want a good pair of binoculars for general use, I don't think you can buy better.
The wider part of the carrying strap is stiff, especially compared to the soft neoprene straps that are common nowadays. No big deal with these relatively light binoculars, but I will probably replace the strap at some point. The position of the strap attachment lugs, with binoculars as short as these, means that they point into your body when you carry them around the neck. That takes a bit of getting used to. Neither of these points are important, and do not prevent me from giving these binoculars an unreserved recommendation.

This is a fantastic little binocular, with a very smooth and reasonably fast focus mechanism, an incredibly sharp and generous sweet spot and a very wide field of view together with a real 3-D image which has instantly made it my favourite optic, especially for looking at birds in trees and hedges. Despite its small aperture, it is also excellent for astronomy - astigmatism is very low, giving pin sharp star images in the sweet spot, and contrast is exceptional, making it capable of revealing faint diffuse objects like the California Nebula (an elusive object with 10x50s, even on a very good night). As far as I'm concerned, this binocular is optically every bit as good as my Zeiss Victory 8x32 FL. Indeed, I don't think any binocular I use gives me the palpable sense of visual pleasure this one gives me each time I lift it to my eyes.
Useless eyepiece guard, which I instantly replaced with one from a Monarch 7 8x42 which fits much better (as long as you don't attach it to the neck strap). Some might criticise this binocular for blur and some coma in the outer field of view, but this is the price you pay for such a wide field. The binocular is not waterproofed, but it is solidly made for a porro and feels built to last as long as you treat it well. Eye relief is not ideal for glasses wearers, but it is adequate and more generous than in Swarovski's Habicht series. There is a tiny amount of chromatic aberration (compared to Zeiss Victory), to which I am very sensitive, but I do not consider this problematic (it is more noticeable in Nikon's 10x35 E2). Personally, I think that any bad points in this binocular are academic. What is really bad, indeed an absolute shame, is that Nikon have discontinued this series.
