Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens

The Sony FE 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 G OSS lens is perfect for any sports or wildlife photographer, regardless of skill level.

Outstanding image quality and high resolution throughout the zoom range

Outstanding image quality and resolution are offered throughout the zoom range, thanks to its five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one aspherical element.

The aspherical element suppresses spherical aberration and distortion, while the ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration that can be a problem at super-telephoto focal lengths.

Fast, precise AF keeps up with swift subjects

Sony's DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) system has the power and precision needed to drive the lens's mechanism for remarkably fast, accurate focusing. High positioning accuracy means that no movement is wasted. Pinpoint autofocus is achieved with blazing speed. The DDSSM system is incredibly quiet, too.

Beautiful, natural G lens bokeh

An 11-blade circular aperture mechanism adds to the beauty of the bokeh produced by this lens, making it possible to use the narrow depth of field available at super-telephoto focal lengths to produce striking images with deep, creamy G lens bokeh.

Excellent control and reliability in the field

Thanks to an inner zoom mechanism, the length of the lens does not change while zooming. This allows stable handheld operation with consistent balance.

Customisable focus hold buttons, in three locations 90° apart, allows easy access when shooting in any orientation.

Have peace of mind, whatever the weather, thanks to its dust and moisture resistant design. The front lens has a fluorine coating to resist water, oil and other unwanted matter.

Zoom up to 1200mm with a teleconverter

The lens is compatible with both the 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, helping you achieve up to 1200mm at F13. Both versions are top quality, keeping superior image quality and Auto-Focus performance.

The zoom range with the 1.4x is 280-840mm, with an aperture range of F8-9.

The zoom range with the 2.0x is 400-1200mm, with an aperture range of F11-13.

Key Features

  • Outstanding corner-to-corner G Lens resolution throughout the zoom range and beautiful G Lens bokeh
  • DDSSM technology delivering fast, precise, quiet AF that tracks moving subjects with extreme accuracy.
  • Refined control and reliability with internal zooming mechanism.
  • Optional 1.4x and 2.0x Teleconverters extend the lens’s focal length to a maximum of 1200mm at F13 with outstanding image quality and AF performance.

We bought this lens for photographing birds in our garden, and, when allowed, out and about. We are wedding photographers (normally) and have both A73 and A7R4 cameras. It works great on the A73, see attached photo. However, the focusing in AFC mode on the A7R4 is a little hit and miss. This is diappointing, due to the obvious cropping benefits of the larger 61MB sensor. Having looked on line, this seems to be a common complaint, is there a likely resolution from Sony?

I already had a lens that covered this focal length, albeit for my Micro Four Thirds cameras. However I have a Sony A7ii now and had heard that the larger light gathering properties of a full frame sensor, should produce superior results, plus I would have an extra 4Mp to crop into. Christmas was coming, there was a £100 cash back offer and Amazon was offering a £70 gift voucher if I bought it, so I took the plunge.

My photographic opportunities have been a bit lean since purchase, but I am pleased with the results so far. They are not 4 1/2 times as good as the M4/3 lens price differential, but I am satisfied with my purchase. The lens is sharp wide open at 600mm and I like the internal focusing. I do not like the strap which is too narrow and uncomfortable to use.

I have made a camouflage protective cover for the camera/lens combo and I have changed the foot for one which Arca Swiss compatible and also fitted a home made handle using a flash bracket and that gives me a steadier grip and I am getting away with sharp, hand held shots, 250th second iso 2000 f6.3. in the darker winter months.

This will almost certainly be my goto long lens, but I will keep the M4/3 device for travel.
