Why should I Upgrade my Canon 5D Mark III to the Mark IV?
Although both cameras feature a full-frame sensor, the 5D Mark IV has a significantly better resolution as a result of the sensor. The 5D Mark III has a 22.3MP sensor compared to the much superior 30.4MP sensor of the 5D Mark IV. To put that into perspective, the 5D Mark II had a 21.1MP sensor, so you can see how Canon have ramped things up a bit!
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Digital SLR Camera Body - Main Features & Benefits
The 5D Mark IV has two separate processors (DIGIC 6 & DIGIC 6+) that work simultaneously at different tasks (image capture and metering). This update makes the Mark IV faster and more reliable.
The AF system has been tweaked so all of its 61-points are cross-type and sensitive down to f/8 and work in -3EV, perfect for wildlife photographers and those who use long lenses with converters.
The body design is very similar to the Mark III with only a few small changes, namely it's weight (50g lighter), as a result of the interior being made from aluminium and not stainless steel. Canon also suggest that the weatherproofing has also been improved.
The ISO range is higher in the 5D Mark IV and the camera also performs better than the 5D Mark III at the top end speeds (32,000).
30.4 MP CMOS full-frame sensor - A significant upgrade on the Canon 5D Mark III, delivering sharper and more detailed images.
4K video up to 30p with a very impressive bitrate of approximately 500mbps. Our recommendation when recording at the higher bitrate in 4k would be to have multiple storage cards!
ISO sensitivity ranging from 100-32,000 - Performs better at the top ends compared to the 5D Mark III and therefore more capable in low-light.
Dual-pixel Raw - Make micro adjustments to focus...after you've taken the shot! a very useful feature not available on the Mark III enabling you to tweak those images that are slightly off.
3.2-inch touchscreen Clear View LCD II with 1,620k dots - Touchscreen wasn't available with the Mark III, and now considered 'the norm' Canon have added this feature to the 5D Mark IV making it useful to zoom (by pinch), and setting the autofocus point when video recording or shooting live view.
Optical viewfinder with approximately 100% coverage
Built-in Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC - Control the camera remotely and instantly share images and videos with a smart device.
Ability to upload to FTP directly via Wi-Fi
USB 3.0 port for fast tethered file transfer
Our review of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR
Dubbed 'the biggest release of the year' (2016), the long awaited Canon EOS 5D Mark IV had a tough job following the huge success of the best-selling EOS 5D Mark III.
There’s an abundance of new features as mentioned above, but the ones that stick out for us are the impressive jump to a 30.4 Megapixel CMOS sensor, combined with the DIGIC 6+ image processor. This combination, along with the AF system found in the 1DX Mark II (Canon’s flagship professional model), makes this a very impressive Digital SLR Camera.
