- The best portrait lens ever made for digital?
- Nothing it’s fantastic

To coincide with the launch of the Fujifilm GFX 100S medium format camera, Fujifilm has also released a new powerhouse for portrait photography. The Fujifilm GF 80mm f1.7 R WR lens is ideal for those working in controlled environments such as the studio. Portrait photographers can take advantage of a super-fast f1.7 aperture that produces a brilliantly soft and well-rounded bokeh.
A practical size at 99.2mm long and weighing just 795g, with a filter thread size of 77mm, the GF 80mm F1.7 is suited for both in and out of the studio.
Not just for
The widest aperture to date of the Fujifilm GFX lenses, the Fujifilm GF80mm f/1.7 produces exquisite image quality coupled with beautifully soft bokeh.
The GF 80mm F/1.7 features a powerful DC motor that has enough torque to drive the focus group of six lens elements. This allows the lens to deliver accurate and reliable autofocus, even when the lens is wide-open at F1.7 and depth of field is extremely shallow. The lens alos supports the Face/Eye AF function.
Nine-rounded diaphragm blades that provide edge-to-edge sharpness when stopped down or produce incredibly smooth bokeh when wide open, creating astounding separation between a subject and its background. 12 Lens elements in nine groups, including one aspherical element and two Super ED elements, ensures that this lens is optimally balanced to control spherical aberration.
Weather-resistant seals have been applied to the lens barrel at 10 location on the lens. This bolsters the lens against dust and water whilst allowing the lens to operate at temperatures down to -10ºC. Fluorine has also been applied to the front lens element in order to repel dirt and for an added layer of protection.
Shorter and stubbier than it’s GF family member, the Fujifilm GF110mm f/2 R LM WR, the new 80mm lens comes in at just 796g making it practically a featherweight fighter when it comes to its competition.
The GF 80mm f1.7 sits comfortably in between the likes of the Fujifilm GF110mm f/2 R LM WR and the Fujifilm GF 45mm F2.8 R WR, giving users that extra fast aperture with classically soft bokeh.
A slightly slower autofocus speed makes this lens best suited to a controlled environment such as the studio, that said, a WR (weather resistant) design means you can take this lens out in the great wide world without worry.
Medium format shooters such as owners of the Fujifilm GFX 50R or Fujifilm GFX50S may be seeking something shorter than the likes of the Fujifilm GF110mm f/2 R LM WR for their studio portrait photography, so that’s where the GF 80mm f1.7 comes in very handy.
